Trauma Therapy in Arlington, TX
Trauma isn’t only what happened to you. It’s what your body decided it had to do about it, and then never stopped doing. Greater House Counseling provides trauma therapy in Arlington, TX for childhood wounds, PTSD, and attachment injuries — the patterns that protected you once and now get in the way. EMDR certified, in person or online across Texas.
When it doesn’t look like trauma
A lot of people don’t come in saying “I’m traumatized.” They come in saying something else:
- I can read a room in two seconds and I can’t turn it off
- I say yes when I mean no, and then resent everyone
- I go blank in conflict and think of what I meant to say three hours later
- Something small happens and my reaction is enormous, and I don’t recognize myself
- I’m fine. I’ve been fine for years. I just can’t feel much of anything
Those aren’t personality flaws. They’re adaptations — they worked once, in a situation where you needed them. The problem is that they kept running after the situation ended. More on that here.
Trauma that came from relationships
Not all trauma is a single event. Some of it is the accumulated weight of not being protected, not being responded to, or being loved on conditions you couldn’t meet. That kind takes shape inside relationships, which is also where it tends to resurface — with a partner, with your kids, with your own parents.
I work as a marriage and family therapist, which means I look at trauma in the context of the relationships it formed in rather than treating it as something that happened to you in isolation. More here: What Is Attachment Trauma?
How the work actually goes
We build stability before we go digging. That’s not stalling — going straight at the worst memory without footing underneath you usually just re-floods you, and teaches you that therapy is unsafe.
When you’re ready, EMDR is often the tool I reach for, because it works on the part of trauma that talking doesn’t reach. I’m certified in it.
Trauma work often runs alongside individual counseling or grief and loss work, depending on what you’re carrying.
You are not starting from broken
The pattern you’re frustrated with is usually the smartest thing a younger version of you could come up with. We’re not replacing you. We’re updating what your system still thinks is true.
This is workable.
You don’t need to know where to start, or have the story organized before you call. That’s part of the work.
You don't have to figure this out alone.
