Grief & Loss Counseling in Arlington, TX
Grief is easiest to talk about when someone has died. It is much harder when the loss doesn’t come with a funeral, or with anyone checking in after the second week. Greater House Counseling offers grief and loss counseling in Arlington, TX for death, divorce, estrangement, and the losses no one else names. In person or online across Texas.
The losses nobody names
- A marriage that ended — whether or not either of you left
- A parent who is still alive, and still not someone you can call
- The family you needed and didn’t get — I wrote about this here
- Infertility, or a pregnancy that didn’t continue
- Estrangement from a child, a sibling, a church, a community
- The version of your life you were fairly sure you’d have by now
These count. And if the loss was a death — a spouse, a parent, a child, a friend — that belongs here too. If you’ve been quietly wondering whether yours is “big enough” to bring to therapy, that question is itself worth bringing.
There are no stages you have to complete
The five stages were never meant as a checklist, and grief doesn’t move in order. It circles. You’ll have a stretch of feeling fine and then get taken out by a song in a grocery store, and conclude you’re going backward. You’re not. That’s the actual shape of it.
There’s also no deadline. Nobody gets to tell you the window has closed — including you.
What we do with it
Not “get over it.” The work is usually about being able to carry it without it running your whole life: finding words for what was actually lost, dealing with the guilt or relief or anger that came along with it, and letting the relationship it belonged to still matter.
When grief gets stuck — when it isn’t moving at all, or when the loss itself was traumatic — EMDR can help unstick it, often alongside trauma therapy.
Grief inside a marriage
Two people rarely grieve the same loss at the same speed, and that mismatch causes an enormous amount of damage between people who are both hurting. If that’s where you are, this may be work to do together rather than alone.
There’s no right amount of time to wait before talking to someone. If it’s on your mind, that’s enough.
You don't have to figure this out alone.
